Sacred Places

Calm, lake in a forest, reflecting the trees.

The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on September 6, 2026.

“Loving one place in particular, no matter how ordinary or how small, paying attention to its life and changes over time, awakens us to the sacredness of all places, to the life of each place, both human and other than human. Loving one place in particular, paying attention to its life and changes over time, awakens us to the fragility of each place, the vulnerability of the whole system…

“Loving our own particular places, mine, yours, wherever they are and however they speak to you, knowing the sacredness of the whole web of creation, we must look open eyed and open hearted at the darkness of the news. We must look at it, be aware of it, but not stare into it. If you stare too long at the darkness, it will make you crazy, it will make you cross eyed, and it will make you what it is: cynical, hopeless, convinced of the inevitability of bad outcomes. The gospel of love calls us instead to stay rooted in that love, to stay rooted in our own sacred places.”
