Mystery
The reflection by Rev. Jeanne Randall-Bodman presented on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
“What Christian nationalism rests on is a claim of providential history for the founding of this country… The United States, they claim, is a Christian nation, and Christianity has found a unique and providential expression in the United States. Two halves of the same equation: the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation, because it was founded as a Christian nation, it is uniquely called by God. So, it should have unique amounts of power in the globe.
“Both our nation and our religion are harmed by this confluence of those ideas. This is idolatry indeed.
“As we stand fast against this perversion of the teaching of Jesus, we must also call ourselves to hold our own certainties loosely; to allow God to be mystery, to test all we claim by the law of love.”
